U.S. Postal Service Honors Coast Guard Academy’s 150th Anniversary With Commemorative Stamp

The United States Postal Service is marking a historic military education milestone this weekend with the official rollout of a brand-new commemorative postage stamp dedicated to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The special philatelic release celebrates the institution’s 150th anniversary, paying tribute to a century and a half of maritime leadership, cadet instruction, and service to the nation.

The issuance serves as a formal recognition of the academy’s sesquicentennial year, highlighting its enduring legacy in developing maritime officers. Over its 150-year history, the institution has trained generations of personnel responsible for enforcing federal maritime laws, conducting search and rescue missions, and defending waterways across the globe.

To introduce the new collectible to the public, an official first-day-of-issue ceremony is scheduled for Saturday morning in New London, Connecticut. The event will begin at 10 a.m. Eastern Time at the Custom House Pier located along Waterfront Park, placing the festivities directly adjacent to the historic maritime waters that define the academy’s regional roots.

The ceremony has been timed to coincide with the broader Maritime Heritage Festival, a regional waterfront gathering that draws maritime enthusiasts, military personnel, and local residents. By holding the stamp dedication alongside the festival, organizers are integrating the formal commemorative unveiling into a wide-ranging community celebration of naval culture and tradition.

Attendees visiting the waterfront for the festivities will have the opportunity to take part in various maritime activities taking place throughout the weekend. The festival itinerary features scheduled public tours of both military vessels and privately owned ships, alongside dynamic operational demonstrations conducted by active Coast Guard personnel.

USPS officials have confirmed that the dedication event is entirely free and welcoming to all members of the public, including local families, maritime historians, and avid stamp collectors. To help facilitate seating and entry accommodations, organizers have invited individuals planning to attend to complete an advance registration through the Postal Service’s online portal.

The Postal Service emphasized the broader cultural and historical significance of the release, stating in an official announcement that this special issue continues the agency's long-standing postal tradition of honoring the nation’s premier military service institutions. Through its stamp program, the agency regularly documents key military branches and educational academies that have shaped American history.

The aesthetic presentation of the commemorative stamp was conceived by art director Antonio Alcalá, who designed the layout on behalf of the Postal Service. The finished artwork thoughtfully juxtaposes two distinct Coast Guard cutters, representing both the deep pedagogical roots and the modern operational capabilities of the service branch.

One of the central focal points of the stamp design is the USCGC Eagle, a celebrated tall ship that has functioned as the Coast Guard Academy’s primary training vessel since 1946. For decades, cadets have learned traditional seamanship, navigation, and leadership under sail aboard the historic vessel, making it an enduring and recognizable emblem of the school’s instructional curriculum.

Complementing the historic training ship is an image of the USCGC Bertholf, representing the contemporary operational fleet of the modern Coast Guard. The Bertholf is deployed for critical real-world missions, specializing in maritime border security operations and complex offshore drug interdiction efforts aimed at intercepting illicit trafficking at sea.

The visual elements on the stamp were created using authentic military photography captured directly by enlisted service members. Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew Thieme took the photograph showcasing the USCGC Eagle, while Petty Officer 1st Class Steven Strohmaier captured the dynamic image of the USCGC Bertholf featured in the design.

To ensure widespread availability for both everyday correspondence and collectors nationwide, the Postal Service has ordered a substantial production run of 12 million copies of the Coast Guard Academy stamp. The volume reflects anticipation of high interest among military families, alumni, philatelists, and the general public.

Patrons seeking to acquire the commemorative items can purchase sheets through multiple official distribution channels. In addition to local post office locations, orders can be placed online through the official Postal Service retail store website or by calling the dedicated toll-free telephone ordering line at 844-737-7826.

With this new release, the Coast Guard Academy’s 150-year dedication to service, discipline, and maritime defense is officially immortalized in the annals of American philately. The stamp offers the nation a tangible keepsake commemorating a cornerstone of United States maritime heritage.
