East Texas Man Jailed on Child Injury Charges Following Death of Five-Month-Old Infant

Authorities in East Texas have taken a 22-year-old man into custody following an extensive investigation into the fatal injury and subsequent death of a five-month-old child last month. The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office announced that the suspect was apprehended after investigators gathered sufficient evidence linking him to the tragic incident.

The suspect, identified as Braxton Cole, was officially booked into the Harrison County Jail on September 4. Cole faces a severe felony charge of serious bodily injury to a child in connection with the infant's death. As judicial proceedings get underway, court records show that his bond has been set at $100,000, and he remains detained in the county detention center.

The tragic sequence of events began on the morning of August 8, when the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office communications division received an urgent distress call. Emergency dispatchers logged the call at approximately 11:40 a.m., with the caller reporting that a five-month-old baby had been discovered completely unresponsive.

The emergency call directed authorities to a private residence located along the 18000 block of Farm-to-Market Road 2208, situated near the unincorporated community of Harleton in Harrison County. Given the critical nature of the dispatch report, county emergency personnel immediately mobilized to respond to the rural address.

First responders rushed to the scene to render immediate life-saving care to the infant. The emergency response included members of the Harleton Volunteer Fire Department alongside specialized paramedics from Christus Emergency Medical Services. Upon arriving at the residence, rescue teams quickly initiated emergency medical protocols to treat the unresponsive baby.

Due to the critical condition of the child, medical personnel swiftly coordinated emergency transport from the rural residence to an advanced healthcare facility. The infant was rushed by ambulance to a hospital located in neighboring Longview, where specialized medical teams attempted further medical intervention. Despite the efforts of healthcare providers, the infant was officially pronounced dead later that afternoon.

Following the confirmation of the infant's passing at the hospital, law enforcement officials immediately initiated a comprehensive death investigation. Investigators from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office were assigned to thoroughly examine the circumstances that led up to the five-month-old's sudden medical distress and fatal outcome.

As part of the initial investigative phase, detectives conducted detailed interviews with family members, including the infant’s father. The father informed law enforcement officials that he had discovered the child unresponsive inside the residence only a short time before the 911 emergency call was placed to county dispatchers.

In the weeks following the infant’s death, county investigators carried out a rigorous inquiry to reconstruct the timeline of events. Detectives worked to collect evidence, evaluate medical findings, and conduct interviews in order to determine the exact nature and cause of the injuries that resulted in the infant's fatal trauma.

After compiling the relevant findings and developing sufficient probable cause, detectives successfully petitioned the court for an arrest warrant against Cole. Law enforcement officers located and arrested the 22-year-old on September 4 without further incident, formally placing him under arrest for causing serious bodily injury to the infant.

The charge of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury represents one of the most severe offenses under Texas criminal law, reflecting the grave physical harm sustained by the young victim. Cole’s arrest warrant and subsequent $100,000 bond underscore the serious nature of the allegations presented by county prosecutors and investigators.

In a formal statement addressing the community, Harrison County Sheriff B.J. Fletcher spoke to the profound emotional weight that cases involving infant fatalities place on first responders and the surrounding community. Fletcher noted that while any loss of life is undeniably tragic, investigations centered on the death of an innocent child are among the most heartbreaking and difficult challenges law enforcement officers ever encounter in the line of duty.

Sheriff Fletcher also commended the personnel who worked tirelessly on the multi-week inquiry, emphasizing the high degree of professional dedication required to see the case through to an arrest. He expressed deep pride in the men and women of the sheriff's office for the compassion, professionalism, and unwavering determination they consistently demonstrated throughout the entire investigative process.

As of now, Cole remains incarcerated inside the Harrison County Jail as local prosecutors prepare the case for forthcoming court hearings. The sheriff’s office has concluded its initial phase of the inquiry with the arrest, and the matter is now transitioning into the legal jurisdiction of the county court system.
