Wyoming PBS has officially established its broadcast debate schedule for the upcoming 2026 general election, but the lineup notably excludes a forum for the state's high-profile U.S. Senate race. The cancellation comes after the Republican nominee, incumbent U.S. Representative Harriet Hageman, failed to reply to an invitation to appear on stage against her general election opponent.

The absence of a Senate matchup has sparked criticism regarding candidate accessibility and public discourse ahead of the fall vote. Network leadership confirmed that because standard broadcast guidelines prohibit hosting single-candidate debate programs, Hageman’s lack of communication effectively brought an end to the planned televised event.

Wyoming PBS Chief Executive Officer Joanna Kail confirmed the scheduling breakdown, explaining that formal invitations had been extended to both certified candidates on the ballot for an October broadcast. While Democratic nominee James Byrd met the confirmation deadline, Hageman’s campaign offered no response, leaving the network with no path forward under its current debate structure.

The decision has drawn sharp rebukes from Byrd, a former state lawmaker from Cheyenne who secured the Democratic nomination earlier this year. In a statement released Thursday, Byrd voiced intense frustration over Hageman’s unwillingness to engage in a televised debate, characterizing her refusal to appear as a disservice to the voters of Wyoming.

Byrd escalated his criticism in a follow-up statement issued Friday morning, announcing the launch of an effort aimed at keeping public media accessible to the electorate. He argued that elected officials should be held accountable before the general public, asserting that leaders must be willing to defend their records and ideas directly on a shared stage.

In his public remarks, Byrd maintained that allowing a nonresponsive campaign to derail a scheduled broadcast creates an unfair political dynamic. He emphasized that canceling the debate entirely punishes the candidate who agreed to participate, while simultaneously depriving Wyoming residents of their only televised opportunity to evaluate both nominees side by side before casting their ballots.

To remedy the situation, Byrd urged Wyoming PBS not to abandon its Senate coverage altogether. Instead, the Democratic challenger proposed that the public broadcaster transition to an alternative format, such as an extended solo interview or a single-candidate town hall session, ensuring that viewers still receive substantive election programming.

According to Kail, the public television station is taking the public interest into consideration. Network leadership is actively reviewing alternative coverage formats beyond the conventional two-candidate debate structure to provide voters with meaningful insight into the race, an avenue that Byrd’s campaign indicated it remains hopeful about exploring.

The Byrd campaign also highlighted a similar scheduling challenge that arose during the 2026 primary election season. When the Democratic primary debate faced potential cancellation after candidate Billy Benavidez initially failed to reply, persistent outreach efforts by PBS personnel successfully brought the candidates together to hold the forum.

In defense of the congresswoman’s campaign approach, Hageman advisor Tim Murtaugh issued a written statement asserting that the Republican candidate remains dedicated to direct voter contact. Murtaugh noted that Hageman intends to continue the outreach strategy she has utilized over the past five years rather than participating in televised debate broadcasts.

According to Murtaugh, Hageman emphasizes transparency by hosting in-person town halls across every county in Wyoming. Her campaign also cited her distribution of weekly newsletters containing legislative recaps and official voting records as evidence of her ongoing commitment to communicating directly with constituents across the state.

The decision to bypass the PBS forum aligns with a consistent pattern for Hageman, who has not stepped onto a debate stage since her high-profile 2022 Republican primary contest against Liz Cheney for Wyoming's lone U.S. House seat. The 2026 contest marks the third consecutive general election cycle in which Hageman has declined or ignored debate invitations from Wyoming PBS.

Despite the cancellation of the Senate broadcast, Wyoming PBS will proceed with televised debates for several other major statewide contests. The scheduled programming includes back-to-back evenings of debates featuring certified candidates seeking executive and educational leadership offices across Wyoming.

On October 14, the network will host candidate debates for both the gubernatorial and secretary of state races. The following evening, October 15, the station will broadcast debates featuring candidates running for Wyoming's seat in the U.S. House of Representatives as well as contenders for the position of state superintendent of public instruction.

The televised events will take place inside the Riverton High School Auditorium, located at 2001 W. Sunset Drive in Riverton. Moderated by Steve Peck of Wyoming PBS, the debates will incorporate question panels featuring journalists from Wyoming Public Media and the Cowboy State Daily, offering regional analysis and questioning on key state issues.

All scheduled debates will be open to in-person public attendance, broadcast live over the air on Wyoming PBS, and streamed concurrently on the station’s official YouTube platform. The debates arrive as voters prepare for the November 3 general election, with early and absentee voting officially getting underway across Wyoming on October 6.
