Oklahoma County Judicial Candidate Warren Plunk Passes Away Just Weeks Before Election

The political landscape of Oklahoma County has been significantly altered with the sudden death of Warren Plunk, a candidate for the position of District Judge. Plunk, who was in the midst of a spirited campaign against incumbent Judge Susan Stallings, passed away on Saturday, August 29, at the age of 54.

A resident of Oklahoma, Plunk had been a dedicated attorney since 2006, specializing in criminal defense. His campaign was marked by his unwavering commitment to serving others, as highlighted on his official website. His journey as a lawyer and community leader was characterized by his "servant's heart," according to Tom Vineyard, the pastor of Higher Plain Baptist Church.

The community was deeply affected by Plunk's death. Vineyard described him as a decent man with a profound impact on those around him. "It really would have been good to see him as a judge, having a Christian perspective, a biblical perspective," Vineyard shared with The Oklahoman. "It would have been good to have a judge ... that could have given people a second chance."

Plunk's opponent, Susan Stallings, has known him for years. "He is such a decent guy," Stallings said, reflecting on her colleague and rival. The two were set to face off in the general election on November 3 for the office in the state's 7th judicial district.

However, the law dictates that Plunk and Stallings will not appear on the general election ballot. The governor is now required to call a special election to fill the judicial seat. Plunk had amassed $19,415 in contributions through August 10, according to his latest campaign report.

Stallings, who was first elected in 2018, has presided over several high-profile cases. In May, she oversaw the fraud trial of restaurateur Brent Swadley. The owner of Swadley's Bar-B-Q is currently awaiting sentencing.

The impact of Plunk's death extends beyond the courtroom. In November, Stallings stepped down from a significant case involving the co-founders of Epic Charter Schools due to Plunk's candidacy. She was set to preside over the trial in the racketeering case against Ben Harris and David Chaney. Her recusal was due to a conflict of interest involving Joe White, the defense attorney for Harris, who chairs Plunk's campaign.

The Oklahoma County Courthouse, a symbol of justice in the region, now faces a period of uncertainty. The sudden loss of a candidate like Plunk, who many believed could bring a fresh perspective to the bench, has left the community in shock and reflection.

As the election process continues to unfold, the focus remains on the future of the judicial seat and the search for a new candidate to represent the interests of the people of Oklahoma County. The legacy of Warren Plunk, however, will undoubtedly live on, inspiring many with his dedication to service and justice.
