Texas Transportation Officials Reassure Drivers After Viral TikTok Video Shows Seam in San Antonio Overpass

Concerns regarding highway infrastructure safety swept across social media in San Antonio after a viral video captured what appeared to be an alarming gap in an overhead bridge. The footage, filmed along a heavily traveled interchange, prompted motorists to question whether the structure was sound and urged state authorities to step in. In response, Texas transportation officials moved swiftly to clarify that the visible opening was not a structural defect, but rather an intentional and standard engineering feature.

The incident began when San Antonio resident Courtney Renee was waiting in traffic along the connector ramp traveling from Loop 1604 onto northbound Interstate 35. While stopped on a Thursday afternoon at approximately 2 p.m. on September 10, Renee noticed a visible line of separation in the concrete roadway structure situated overhead and chose to film the anomaly.

Although the separation did not appear massive, it was sufficiently wide that passing vehicles overhead could be glimpsed moving across the elevated roadway through the opening. Unsure of what the aperture meant for highway safety, Renee uploaded the footage to the social media platform TikTok with a caption openly asking whether such a seam was considered acceptable on an Interstate 35 overpass structure.

The short clip spread rapidly across the digital platform, quickly capturing the attention of commuters and residents throughout the region. Within a short period, the post accumulated roughly 596,000 views and generated nearly 600 comments from fellow drivers who expressed acute anxiety about the stability of the bridge.

Many respondents in the video's comment section voiced deep unease about driving under or over that specific segment of the highway. Some commenters, such as Brian Thomas, declared that they would actively detour around the area going forward after identifying the precise location. Another viewer, Jess Rivilla, openly shared fears regarding the catastrophic possibility of an overpass collapsing during transit.

As public apprehension mounted, the Texas Department of Transportation addressed the circulating claims directly. Jennifer Serold, an official spokesperson for the agency, provided clarity regarding the bridge's design, confirming that the visible divide shown in the video is actually an expansion joint rather than a structural fracture or breakdown.

According to Serold, expansion joints serve as normal and vital components in modern bridge architecture. These purposeful openings are specifically incorporated into overpass design to accommodate the natural physical shifts, contractions, and expansions that concrete undergoes when exposed to shifting ambient temperatures and environmental moisture variations.

In addition to the visible joint itself, viewers had pointed out noticeable concrete spalling along the edge of the overpass section. Serold clarified that this surface-level deterioration does not present any underlying construction or load-bearing danger to the traveling public.

The agency confirmed that while the spalled concrete will receive attention through normal routine maintenance procedures, it has in no way compromised the structural integrity of the bridge. Emphasizing that traveler safety remains the agency's primary mission, Serold stated that the ramp connecting westbound Loop 1604 to southbound Interstate 35 and Lookout Road continues to be fully safe for vehicular traffic.

The interchange where the video was captured is part of an ongoing, major infrastructure development known as the Interstate 35 Northeast Expansion, or NEX Project. This massive regional transportation undertaking has been actively underway since June 2022 to upgrade highway corridors across the San Antonio metropolitan area.

Maintenance and deck improvements have been an ongoing element of the regional construction effort. TxDOT previously announced scheduled closures in March 2025, when crews temporarily shut down southbound ramps leading to Loop 1604 and the westbound ramp heading to southbound Interstate 35 near Lookout Road for approximately three days to execute targeted bridge deck operations.

The Central project component of the broader NEX initiative, which encompasses the roadway infrastructure near Lookout Road, is scheduled to remain in progress for several more years. Official information published on the department's website indicates an anticipated completion target of late 2027.

As heavy engineering activities persist throughout the corridor, drivers should expect continued traffic adjustments. The state agency has already scheduled additional temporary closures in the surrounding area for the coming December to allow work crews to advance subsequent phases of the expansive construction program.

Ultimately, the viral episode highlights how social media platforms can rapidly amplify public infrastructure anxieties, while prompting transportation authorities to emphasize the technical realities of roadway construction. Despite the dramatic visual appearance in the video, state officials maintain that the bridge remains sound, engineered to flex under daily stress, and safe for everyday commuters.
