Newly released body-worn camera footage has provided a direct view into a lethal confrontation in which Santa Monica police officers shot and killed an armed individual inside a crowded coastal recreation area. The video, made public by the Santa Monica Police Department on Saturday, documents the rapid escalation that unfolded in broad daylight in front of numerous parkgoers.
The fatal encounter occurred on the afternoon of August 22 at Palisades Park, a heavily visited municipal green space overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Authorities have officially identified the deceased individual as 44-year-old Michael Rodriguez, following confirmation released by the county medical examiner's office.
According to law enforcement records, the incident originated shortly before 1:00 p.m. when patrol units were dispatched to the intersection of Broadway and Ocean Avenue. Dispatchers had received urgent calls regarding a separate disturbance, specifically reporting an unidentified man who was allegedly chasing a woman in the vicinity of the Broadway stairs.
Officers arrived in the area and began their standard field inquiry, canvassing the perimeter and interviewing witnesses nearby to piece together what had occurred during the reported chase. As personnel conducted these witness interviews within the park boundaries, their attention was suddenly diverted by an entirely distinct threat developing only yards away.
Police officials stressed that Rodriguez was not connected to the initial emergency call involving the woman being chased. Instead, officers happened upon him unexpectedly as they were gathering statements from community members and visitors who were spending their afternoon in the park.
The newly released body camera footage reveals that officers spotted Rodriguez holding a large knife positioned high above his head. Rather than disengaging or remaining stationary, the 44-year-old began moving forward, walking directly toward the uniformed personnel while aiming the blade in their direction.
In the audio and video recordings released to the public, the tension escalated within seconds as officers attempted to halt Rodriguez's advance through urgent vocal commands. One officer can be clearly heard shouting repetitive directives across the park lawn, yelling, "Hey, put that down! Put that down! Put that down!"
Despite the continuous verbal warnings from law enforcement demanding that he drop the weapon, Rodriguez continued approaching the officers. Faced with the immediate advance of an armed subject, an officer discharged their service weapon, striking Rodriguez and bringing him down on the park grounds.
The surrounding scene at the time of the shooting was bustling with activity, as Palisades Park regularly attracts a dense mix of local residents, tourists, food and merchandise vendors, and families. Bodycam video captures the visible urgency among bystanders who were forced to quickly scatter and clear the area to stay out of harm's way.
Following the shooting, investigators closely examined the primary weapon brandished during the confrontation, describing it as a large, fixed-blade utility-style knife featuring pronounced serrations along its edge. Subsequent searches of the suspect and the immediate vicinity revealed that Rodriguez was in possession of three knives in total at the time of the incident.
Immediately after the scene was secured, officers transitioned to rendering emergency aid, initiating lifesaving chest compressions in an effort to revive Rodriguez. He was subsequently transported from the park to a nearby hospital, where medical staff later pronounced him dead.
The distressing sequence of events played out before multiple civilian witnesses who remained in the park during the immediate aftermath. Among them was Caroline Iwanchuk, who observed the emergency resuscitation efforts taking place on the grass shortly after the gunfire ceased.
"I literally came out, and I could see them doing chest compressions on the gentleman. It was just very hard to witness," Iwanchuk recounted, reflecting on the grim scene that unfolded in an area typically known for leisurely weekend recreation.
Law enforcement cordoned off a substantial portion of Palisades Park following the shooting, establishing an extensive investigative perimeter that disrupted park access and closed walkways well into the evening hours as detectives processed evidence.
The Santa Monica Police Department noted that the details made public represent preliminary findings from an ongoing inquiry. A formal criminal investigation into the shooting remains underway to analyze the full sequence of events and review all associated physical and recorded evidence.
In addition to the criminal investigation, the department confirmed that its Internal Affairs Unit has launched a separate administrative inquiry. This internal review will scrutinize the circumstances surrounding the encounter, evaluating whether the tactical decisions, commands, and lethal force used during the incident complied with departmental standards and established policies.
