Authorities in Harrison County, Mississippi, have taken a 71-year-old man into custody following a fatal shooting inside an AT&T retail store that claimed the lives of an employee and an elderly customer. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community as investigators work to determine what prompted the deadly burst of violence on a weekday morning.
The suspect, identified as Samuel Jerome Andrews of Harrison County, faces serious legal consequences following his arrest. According to local jail records, Andrews has been formally booked on two counts of first-degree murder alongside a single charge of discharging a firearm into an occupied group. He remains detained without bond while the judicial process begins.
The tragedy unfolded at approximately 11:14 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 7, at the AT&T commercial storefront situated within the Crossroads Mall shopping center in Gulfport. The strip mall, typically bustling with patrons and midday shoppers, quickly became the focal point of an active law enforcement operation after emergency calls alerted first responders to active gunfire.
According to preliminary accounts gathered by investigators and reported by regional media outlets, the sequence of events began when Andrews arrived at the shopping plaza in a vehicle. Upon parking outside the cellular store, the 71-year-old exited the vehicle armed with a firearm and discharged an initial shot directly into the facility from the exterior.
Following that first shot, Andrews allegedly walked into the retail establishment and opened fire again on those who were inside the building. The sudden gunfire gave individuals in the store minimal opportunity to seek safety or evacuate before the assailant stepped across the threshold.
The victims of the fatal attack were subsequently identified by Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer. They include 31-year-old Shane Basquill, a resident of Kiln who was actively working his shift at the business, and 78-year-old Mary Anne Oberlies, a Gulfport resident who was patronizing the store as a customer at the time of the shooting.
Accounts provided by witnesses depict courageous efforts by Basquill during the final moments of his life. Those present noted that the young store employee attempted to spring into action as soon as the danger presented itself outside the front windows, seeking to secure the premises to shield his colleagues and patrons from harm.
An eyewitness, Courtney Ladner, recounted that someone inside the retail space shouted Basquill’s name when the threat first appeared outside. Basquill immediately sprinted toward the entrance to lock the glass doors, but the gunman unleashed gunfire before the store employee could successfully engage the lock.
Moments following the fatal barrage, another bystander entered the premises without realizing an active assault had just transpired. Carl Musgrove, who arrived at the retail location shortly after the initial gunfire, found himself directly confronting the armed suspect inside the building.
Musgrove detailed a chilling and unnerving exchange with the shooter, noting that Andrews maintained a remarkably calm demeanor throughout the confrontation. According to Musgrove, the suspect warned him directly to vacate the premises, stating that he was going to kill everything inside the store. Musgrove was able to safely turn around and escape the retail space without sustaining physical injuries.
Following the shootings, Andrews fled the Crossroads Mall plaza in an attempt to evade responding officers. Law enforcement personnel quickly converged on the area, cordoning off the storefront and parking lot with yellow crime scene tape while coordinating a pursuit that led to Andrews being apprehended without further loss of life.
Local authorities noted that Andrews had no documented prior criminal history before this catastrophic incident. The absence of a prior record has deepened the mystery surrounding the attack, leaving residents and investigators searching for explanations regarding how such violence unfolded.
As of midweek, an official motive for the double homicide had not been established or publicly released by investigative agencies. Furthermore, records did not immediately clarify whether the 71-year-old suspect had obtained legal representation or if an attorney had been appointed to represent him in upcoming court appearances.
The Gulfport Police Department has assumed control of the comprehensive homicide investigation, working alongside county officials and forensic specialists to process evidence gathered from the retail location and the surrounding commercial plaza.
Law enforcement officials continue to urge anyone with direct knowledge, surveillance recordings, or relevant background details regarding the events at Crossroads Mall to reach out to detectives at the Gulfport Police Department by calling 228-868-5959, or to submit information through Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers at 877-787-5898.
