The Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) has announced a strategic pause for its annual awards gala, which has been a cornerstone of the organization's fundraising efforts for nearly a quarter-century. The decision to halt the event in 2027 comes as the organization seeks to evaluate its fundraising strategy, engage with sponsors, and gather community feedback to ensure long-term sustainability.
Cambridge-based MAPS has been hosting the gala for nearly 25 years, with the event typically generating between $190,000 and $230,000 annually. However, rising costs associated with hosting a large-scale event for over 400 attendees have necessitated a thorough review of future fundraising options. The organization hopes to use this pause to reassess the gala's format, its impact on the community, and its role in MAPS' long-term mission.
"This is a significant decision for us, but one that we believe is necessary for the future of MAPS and the communities we serve," said Paulo Pinto, CEO of the Alliance. "After years of hosting the gala, we felt it was important to take a step back and consider how we can best support our mission moving forward."
The annual awards gala has not only been a major fundraising event for MAPS but also a celebration of the contributions of Portuguese-speaking individuals and communities in Massachusetts. The event has honored business leaders, educators, and other community members for their dedication and service.
During the pause, MAPS plans to engage in one-on-one meetings with past sponsors and supporters to gather their insights on sponsorship opportunities, funding priorities, and the future of the gala. The organization also intends to distribute surveys to gather a broader range of feedback from the community.
"This review process is not just about the gala; it's about ensuring that MAPS remains a vital resource for Portuguese-speaking communities in Massachusetts," Pinto added. "We want to hear from everyone who has been touched by our work, including our sponsors, community leaders, and the individuals we serve."
The Alliance has also highlighted its commitment to maintaining the legacy of the gala. "While we're pausing the event, our goal is to come back stronger and more impactful than ever before," said Patricia de Oliveira, Board President. "We want to ensure that the gala continues to be a celebration of the contributions of our community while also being a sustainable and effective fundraising tool."
MAPS is not new to the challenges of fundraising. Like many organizations, it has had to adapt to changing economic conditions and evolving community needs. The strategic pause is part of a broader effort to ensure that the organization remains resilient and effective in its mission.
"We're proud of what we've accomplished over the years, but we know that there's always room for improvement," said Edna Monteiro Leith, Board Vice President. "This pause is an opportunity for us to reflect, learn, and grow."
The pause in the annual awards gala is expected to last for one year, with the organization aiming to resume hosting the event in 2028. In the meantime, MAPS will continue its work in supporting Portuguese-speaking communities through various programs and initiatives.
