London Inquest Confirms Drag Icon Heklina Died of Acute Drug Toxicity as Police Acknowledge Serious Investigative Failures

British authorities have formally concluded the inquest into the 2023 death of beloved San Francisco drag artist Heklina, ruling that the performer passed away from acute mixed drug toxicity. The official determination, announced during a Tuesday hearing in London, brings a formal conclusion to a three-and-a-half-year inquiry marked by prolonged delays, public protests, and significant procedural missteps by law enforcement.

According to evidence presented by the London Metropolitan Police, comprehensive toxicology analysis revealed a deadly mixture of illegal narcotics in the entertainer's bloodstream. The substances identified included cocaine, MDMA (commonly referred to as ecstasy or molly), methamphetamines, GHB, and ketamine. Investigators concluded that these drugs had been consumed consensually over an estimated 48-hour period leading up to the fatal incident.

During the hearing, which was observed remotely by journalists, police representatives reiterated that extensive inquiries yielded no indication of criminal foul play. Although authorities confirmed that three unidentified men were present in the London flat where the tragedy occurred, investigators maintained that there was no evidence demonstrating third-party involvement or establishing that the death was suspicious.

Heklina, whose legal name was Steven Grygelko, died in April 2023 at the age of 55. A prominent luminary in San Francisco's cultural sphere and a cofounder of the renowned Oasis nightclub, Grygelko had traveled to the United Kingdom alongside longtime friend, creative partner, and fellow drag artist Peaches Christ. The duo was scheduled to perform a run of their theatrical parody production "Mommie Queerest" at London's Soho Theatre.

The two performers were sharing a rented flat during their international trip. However, Peaches Christ had arranged to stay at a local hotel over the weekend to afford Grygelko privacy to arrange encounters with men via gay dating and hookup applications. When Peaches Christ returned to the flat on Monday morning, she discovered Grygelko unresponsive in the living room with narcotics visibly present at the scene.

While Peaches Christ was promptly cleared of any suspicion by attending authorities, the broader investigation into Grygelko’s final hours faced severe scrutiny from the outset. Crucially, the Metropolitan Police failed to publicly release surveillance imagery showing three men exiting the residence until January 2025, nearly two years after the initial discovery of the body.

The extensive delays in transparency caused significant frustration for Grygelko’s legal next-of-kin, Nancy French, as well as the entertainer's wider chosen family. Later in 2025, both French and Peaches Christ revealed that officers had privately indicated that Grygelko had a fatal concentration of drugs in her system, even while the department resisted officially certifying or confirming the exact cause of death for the public record.

The inquiry's progression was further hindered by administrative instability within the investigating agency. Over the course of the multi-year probe, Grygelko's case file was reassigned across four distinct teams of detectives. The Metropolitan Police eventually issued apologies to French and the performer's inner circle for failing to maintain adequate communication and keeping them properly updated on developments.

The protracted handling of the inquiry prompted sharp backlash from the LGBTQ+ community both in California and internationally. Frustrated by what they described as police apathy and mishandling, Peaches Christ organized a major demonstration along London’s Embankment on March 31, 2025. Demonstrators marched from Big Ben directly to New Scotland Yard, the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police, delivering speeches to demand justice and greater institutional accountability.

The mounting external criticism eventually led to an internal review by the Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards. The internal inquiry substantiated several concerns regarding procedural incompetence, officially concluding that two officers had mishandled the investigation into Grygelko’s death.

In an official statement released in conjunction with Tuesday's inquest, the department openly acknowledged its organizational shortcomings. Detective Chief Superintendent Christina Jessah conceded that the initial response and investigative work surrounding Grygelko’s death failed to meet expected standards, admitting that the force's early efforts were not good enough.

Throughout the three-and-a-half-year saga, friends and advocates frequently voiced concerns that the handling of the case was compromised by negligence and underlying homophobic bias. Those apprehensions were heightened by historical and contemporary criticisms of the Metropolitan Police's institutional culture, particularly regarding interactions with sexual minorities.

Public skepticism of the force was substantially reinforced by the findings of a 2023 independent review conducted by Baroness Louise Casey. The high-profile Casey report found clear evidence of institutional homophobia, misogyny, and racism entrenched within the Metropolitan Police, amplifying broader doubts about the department's ability to impartially investigate cases involving LGBTQ+ victims.

Tuesday’s formal ruling provides legal closure to the timeline surrounding the sudden loss of an internationally recognized drag trailblazer. However, the acknowledged investigative failures and the long road to obtaining official answers highlight lingering tensions between law enforcement authorities and the communities they are tasked with serving.
