Jacksonville formally recognized the widespread challenges of apparel deprivation as Mayor Donna Deegan officially proclaimed September 15 as Clothing Insecurity Awareness Day across the municipality. The designation seeks to shine a spotlight on the critical necessity of adequate attire for vulnerable populations throughout the region.

To commemorate the occasion, local nonprofit Presbyterian Social Ministries, Inc. organized a targeted mobilization effort at its central warehouse facility situated in Jacksonville’s Murray Hill neighborhood. Employee volunteers participating in the Community First Credit Union Kindness Crew joined the initiative on-site to sort, inspect, and organize large volumes of donated garments for regional distribution.

The municipal observance was established to draw urgent community focus toward clothing insecurity, an essential human need that regularly affects thousands of Northeast Florida residents. The issue places a disproportionate strain on young children, elderly citizens, military veterans, and individuals and families navigating personal crises or ongoing homelessness.

At the core of the community relief response is Presbyterian Social Ministries' dedicated Clothing with Purpose program. Operating as a regional distribution hub, the program supplies apparel at completely no cost to a network of more than 100 partner non-profit organizations working on the front lines of social services across the area.

Securing clean, properly sized, and situation-appropriate apparel plays an instrumental role in helping vulnerable individuals navigate basic societal milestones. Reliable access to clothing enables youth to attend school with confidence, empowers adults seeking steady employment to present themselves professionally during interviews, and allows individuals facing displacement to maintain personal hygiene, health, and dignity.

Presbyterian Social Ministries has maintained a dedicated presence in the community since its establishment in 2004. Affiliated with the Presbytery of St. Augustine, the organization manages an array of regional assistance initiatives, including Home Safe, a specialized residential housing program that currently provides comprehensive support services for 60 chronically homeless families.

Over the past year, the nonprofit's Clothing with Purpose initiative achieved significant expansion across Northeast Florida. Throughout 2025, the program successfully processed and distributed 218,497 clothing items to 31,214 community members, channeling these critical resources through its collaborative network of local partner charities and relief agencies.

Alongside its substantial humanitarian impact, the clothing program produced tangible environmental benefits for the regional ecosystem. During 2025, the Murray Hill warehouse operation recycled 22,414 pounds of unusable textile materials, successfully preventing roughly 10 tons of discarded fabrics from accumulating in local municipal landfills.

Neil Claasen, the director of logistics at Presbyterian Social Ministries, underscored the intricate operational framework required to manage and route apparel to those facing extreme hardship. Claasen noted that addressing an issue as foundational as clothing insecurity demands a great deal more than simply gathering surplus items from donors.

According to Claasen, Clothing with Purpose provides the underlying warehousing capacity, quality control screening, tracking systems, and regional supply chain that local partner agencies depend upon to secure a consistent flow of quality garments. This centralized logistical support relieves local charities of administrative burdens, allowing them to focus more of their internal resources on core community services.

The operational scale achieved at the Murray Hill warehouse is sustained through steady pipelines of merchandise provided by manufacturing and retail corporate partners. Clothing with Purpose regularly receives substantial volume donations of brand-new and gently used inventory from prominent brands, including Bombas, Victoria's Secret, Natural Life, SanMar, and Kid to Kid.

Teri Ketchum, chief executive officer of Presbyterian Social Ministries, described clean, weather-appropriate attire as an indispensable pillar of everyday human care that must be treated with the same urgency as emergency food assistance or emergency shelter.

Ketchum emphasized that individuals cannot reasonably access life’s essential opportunities without proper clothing, noting that well-fitting attire represents an absolute baseline necessity for participating in the community. She expressed sincere appreciation to the private foundations, corporate entities such as the Community First Cares Foundation, and community volunteers whose investments sustain their faith-based operational mission.

The hands-on sorting and packing assistance provided by the Community First Credit Union Kindness Crew reflected the growing collaboration between local non-profit initiatives and civic-minded corporate workforces. The joint warehouse activation demonstrated how volunteer manpower directly accelerates the intake and redistribution of essential goods to families in crisis.

Sam Inman, the president and chief executive officer of Community First Credit Union, reiterated the financial institution’s dedicated commitment to addressing regional disparities through active civic engagement. Inman stressed that recognizing social deficits is only the first step, noting that lasting community change requires collective, compassionate action.

Inman affirmed that Community First remains proud to deploy its volunteer Kindness Crew to help sort donations at the warehouse, emphasizing that rolling up their sleeves to ensure community members have reliable access to clothing is vital to restoring individual dignity, self-assurance, and long-term stability across Northeast Florida.
