First Alert Weather: Coastal Showers to Shift Inland, High Heat Expected

Jacksonville, FL – The First Alert Weather Team at Action News Jax is forecasting a day of shifting weather patterns, with coastal showers in the morning giving way to heavy downpours and storms in the afternoon.

This morning, residents can expect partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the 70s. However, as the day progresses, a few showers over the Atlantic will make their way onshore, bringing with them the potential for heavy downpours to coastal counties. By the afternoon, these rain showers will move well inland, past Highway 301, and toward I-75, where additional rounds of heavy rain, frequent lightning, and gusty winds are anticipated.

Despite the expected rain, the I-95 corridor is expected to enjoy a lot of dry hours this afternoon. The weather pattern is expected to remain consistent throughout much of the week, with morning coastal showers and afternoon inland storms. This pattern will likely persist through the upcoming days, with the potential for scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Onshore winds will maintain an elevated risk of rip currents at local beaches this week. Temperatures are expected to be in the 80s along the beaches and rise to low to middle 90s inland. This heat wave comes as Jacksonville continues to climb the ranks of years with the most 90-degree days, currently sitting at 96 and poised to enter the "Top 10" this week.

In the tropics, there are no immediate threats to the local area. However, Invest 97L, an offshore system in Louisiana, is expected to become a tropical depression or tropical storm today. It is forecasted to move inland over eastern Texas or western Louisiana by tomorrow evening. These small and compact systems can strengthen or weaken quickly, and hurricane hunters are scheduled to fly into this system this morning to assess its potential.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly, now a tropical wave, are bringing beneficial rains to Puerto Rico. The moisture from this system is expected to approach Florida later this week, but there are no indications of re-development at this time.

For today, the forecast calls for a high of 91 degrees with a few morning coastal showers and a few inland afternoon storms. Tonight, coastal showers are expected to follow, with partly cloudy skies and a low of 74 degrees. The outlook for the coming days includes a mix of morning coastal showers and afternoon storms, with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to the mid-90s.

Jacksonville residents are encouraged to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and to take necessary precautions during periods of heavy rain and storms.
