Downtown Hagerstown Road Closure Scheduled for Community Recovery Walk and Block Party

Motorists navigating through downtown Hagerstown will need to adjust their travel plans this weekend as municipal officials prepare to temporarily shut down a section of a major roadway. The closure has been scheduled to accommodate the upcoming Washington Goes Purple Block Party and Recovery Walk, a community-wide gathering designed to bring local residents together in support of substance use recovery and public education.

According to an official municipal advisory, the planned vehicular shutdown will specifically affect South Potomac Street. The closure will encompass the corridor situated directly between Washington Street and Antietam Street. Drivers who routinely travel through this segment of the city center should prepare for traffic disruptions starting at 10 a.m. on Sept. 12, with the roadway expected to remain closed until roughly 3 p.m. that afternoon.

To safely guide motorists around the designated event perimeter, municipal crews and event organizers will implement a comprehensive traffic-control operation. Clear detour signage will be posted throughout the surrounding vicinity, directing vehicular traffic onto alternative bypass routes. In addition to instructional detour signs, physical safety devices including traffic cones and barricades will be placed across the closed street boundaries to clearly demarcate the pedestrian-only zone.

City officials have also clarified specific protocols concerning emergency response capabilities during the hours of the street shutdown. While standard emergency vehicles will not have continuous through-travel access along the closed block of South Potomac Street, first responders will maintain full capability to access and deliver essential emergency services within the enclosed footprint should the need arise.

Residents, business owners, and commuters seeking further clarification or having specific inquiries regarding the traffic modifications and detour routes are invited to get in touch with local authorities. Questions may be directed to the City of Hagerstown Department of Engineering & Permits by calling 301-739-8577, extension 125, prior to or during the event period.

The centerpiece of the temporary roadway shutdown is the Washington Goes Purple Block Party and Recovery Walk, which is officially scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 12. Designed to be welcoming, accessible, and family friendly, the gathering is entirely free of charge and open to all members of the general public, providing an open forum centered on community health and well-being.

At its core, the gathering focuses on promoting substance use prevention, raising recovery awareness, and actively working to reduce the social stigma often associated with substance use disorders. By bringing these crucial topics into the open downtown streetscape, organizers hope to cultivate broader understanding and encourage supportive conversations across diverse community demographics.

The scheduled programming for the block party features a wide variety of community-oriented presentations and informative activities. Local guest speakers are slated to take the stage to share personal narratives and firsthand perspectives regarding their recovery journeys. These testimonials aim to provide insight, hope, and encouragement to individuals and families impacted by substance use challenges.

In addition to personal testimonies from speakers, numerous community partner organizations will be present on-site to distribute literature and provide educational resources. These participating groups will offer guidance on available local prevention tools, recovery pathways, and support networks for individuals and families seeking assistance or information.

Beyond the educational components, the block party will also feature entertainment and interactive pastimes suitable for visitors of all age groups. Music provided by a live DJ will supply a festive backdrop throughout the three-hour gathering, and organizers explicitly encourage attendees to show their solidarity with the cause by wearing purple clothing during the festivities.

The Block Party and Recovery Walk represents a key component of Washington Goes Purple, an awareness campaign focused on substance use disorder education. Through its ongoing initiatives, the organization works to educate youth and the broader public regarding the hazards of substance misuse, while simultaneously highlighting practical prevention methods and encouraging meaningful discussions regarding recovery and stigma reduction.

The weekend block party is one part of a wider calendar of events organized throughout the month of September in partnership with local cultural and community entities. Among these offerings is an art exhibition titled "Broken Open: Addiction, Recovery and the Work of Love," which represents the eighth annual Washington Goes Purple Exhibit. Presented in collaboration with the Washington County Arts Council, the display will remain open to the public through Sept. 29.

Artistic engagement will continue later in the month with a dedicated Poetry Pop-Up gathering. Scheduled for 5 p.m. on Sept. 19, the poetry event is co-presented by Washington Goes Purple alongside the Washington County Arts Council and will take place at 34 S. Potomac St., providing an expressive platform aligned with the overarching mission of recovery awareness.

Rounding out the month's planned programming is the PROSC Recovery Picnic, slated to take place on Sept. 26 at the North Pavilion within Hagerstown City Park. Organizers announced that the picnic will feature shared food, guest speakers, games, and raffle drawings, offering another community-focused environment to celebrate milestones in recovery and strengthen local connections. Additional information about the full slate of activities is available on the campaign's website at washingtongoespurple.org.
