Detroit law enforcement authorities and municipal fire officials are seeking assistance from community members to identify and locate a man suspected of intentionally setting a fire inside a multi-story residential building located along East Jefferson Avenue earlier this summer. Investigators are asking anyone who recognizes the individual or possesses relevant information regarding the case to step forward immediately.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours of June 9, 2026, within an apartment complex situated in the 9300 block of East Jefferson Avenue, near the intersection of McClellan Avenue on Detroit’s east side. While the incident took place months prior, investigators have continued to pursue investigative leads and are now turning to the broader public to help advance the ongoing investigation.

On Wednesday, the Detroit Police Department and the Detroit Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Division released clear photographic stills and surveillance video footage that capture the suspect moving through the building. Officials hope that circulating these visuals across the community will lead to a positive identification and facilitate the suspect's apprehension.

According to official statements from investigators, building security cameras positioned on the second floor recorded the suspect carrying out the targeted act of arson. The surveillance footage provides a chronological view of the suspect's movements as he navigated the residential hallway during the early morning hours when residents were inside their homes.

The footage reportedly shows the unidentified male carefully pouring an unknown liquid substance directly onto the hallway floor. The accelerant was deposited immediately outside the entrance door of an occupied apartment unit, presenting an imminent hazard to the residents sleeping or residing inside the dwelling at that time.

After dispersing the flammable fluid across the floor, the suspect moved into an adjacent stairwell to conceal himself. From this sheltered position within the stairway, he ignited the pooled liquid, sparking an active fire in the common corridor before fleeing the scene.

Despite the inherent dangers associated with intentional fires set in residential corridors, emergency officials confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the blaze. Prompt containment and circumstances surrounding the incident prevented what could have been a catastrophic event for the building's occupants.

Investigators have compiled a physical profile of the individual based on surveillance footage and available visual evidence. The suspect is described as a male who stands approximately between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 11 inches tall, possessing a medium physical build.

The suspect was seen wearing highly noticeable attire at the time of the offense. Surveillance footage captured him dressed in a dark blue or purple hooded jacket paired with vibrant red pants that featured an intricate white pattern, along with sandal-type footwear on his feet.

In addition to his distinctive clothing, video evidence indicates that the individual appeared to be carrying a handheld electronic tablet during the commission of the crime. Authorities highlighted that the suspect demonstrated heightened awareness of the building's surveillance apparatus, making a concerted and deliberate effort to hide his facial features from the overhead cameras.

The setting of a fire outside an occupied apartment unit underscores the severe risks posed to multi-family residential structures. Hallway blazes in multi-story buildings can rapidly block primary egress pathways, generate toxic smoke, and threaten the lives of dozens of residents residing on surrounding floors.

The Detroit Police Department and the Fire Investigation Division are maintaining an active, joint probe into the June 9 incident. Arson investigators continue to review all available physical evidence, forensic data, and digital video assets gathered from the East Jefferson Avenue property.

Law enforcement leaders emphasize that assistance from local residents and community networks often proves vital in resolving targeted arson cases where suspects take active measures to conceal their identity. Community awareness and citizen participation remain central components of the ongoing investigative strategy.

Anyone who recognizes the individual pictured in the released surveillance media or who holds knowledge about the events of June 9 is urged to contact the Detroit Police Department's Fire Investigation Division directly by calling (313) 596-2940. Community members can also contact the department's dedicated arson tip line at (313) 628-2900.
