Benjamin's Hope to Welcome West Michigan Community for Annual Harvest Festival

West Michigan residents are preparing to gather for an afternoon of vibrant seasonal festivities and meaningful connection as Benjamin’s Hope prepares to host its annual Harvest Festival. Designed as a welcoming, highly accessible celebration open to families, neighbors, and supporters from across the region, the gathering provides a unique blend of traditional autumn entertainment alongside a profound message of social acceptance, inclusion, and communal solidarity.

The public event is scheduled to take place on September 19, running between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Organizers have established the festivities directly on the organization’s expansive grounds situated at 15468 Riley St., located just outside Holland. Admission to the entire afternoon celebration is completely free of charge, ensuring that local families and community members of all backgrounds can participate without financial barriers.

A wide spectrum of autumn-themed activities and seasonal attractions has been arranged across the property to entertain attendees throughout the three-hour afternoon window. Among the primary attractions available to guests are traditional hayrides navigating the scenic farmstead grounds, as well as dedicated pumpkin decorating stations where children and adults alike can explore their artistic creativity and take home seasonal crafts.

In addition to classic fall activities, the festival will feature an assortment of interactive lawn games suitable for guests of all physical ability levels, alongside live musical performances that will provide an energetic and welcoming backdrop throughout the day. Enthusiasts of vintage automotive design and craftsmanship will also have the special opportunity to admire a curated showcase of antique cars exhibited on site.

Collaborative community involvement remains a central pillar of the celebration, highlighted by specialized exhibits and educational presentations brought in by regional partner organizations. The Holland Modular Train Club will be on hand to showcase detailed, operating model train displays, while representatives from the Outdoor Discovery Center will offer educational interactions by introducing attendees to live animals.

The gathering further incorporates local civic engagement and safety education by inviting area first responders to participate directly in the afternoon festivities. Community members attending the event will have welcoming opportunities to meet and interact with these emergency service personnel face-to-face, fostering mutual trust, communication, and familiarization between local service workers and area families in a relaxed setting.

For the organization’s founding leadership, the annual festival represents far more than an ordinary afternoon of seasonal leisure and entertainment. Co-founder Krista Mason noted that the overarching dream behind establishing the organization has always centered on creating an intentional environment where every single individual, regardless of ability, experiences a profound and authentic sense of belonging.

Mason emphasized that the Harvest Festival serves as one of the most vibrant, visible, and heartwarming expressions of that core founding dream. She explained that the event functions primarily as a heartfelt gesture of appreciation directed back toward the surrounding West Michigan community, recognizing the immense generosity, volunteerism, and sustained support the nonprofit has received over the years.

The foundational roots of Benjamin’s Hope trace back more than two decades, originating when Krista and Dave Mason first made the decision to relocate to the Holland area. Upon settling in the region and recognizing the distinct challenges facing adults with specialized developmental needs, the couple sought to construct an enduring supportive infrastructure that would provide long-term care and community integration.

The entire initiative was deeply personal from the start, inspired directly by the couple’s son, Ben, who is profoundly affected by autism. In seeking a secure, dignified, and meaningful future for their son, the Masons embarked on developing a pioneering farmstead model structured specifically to provide safety, routine, purposeful engagement, and continuous personal growth.

From its inception, the farmstead has been carefully guided by core values aimed at ensuring adults with autism and related developmental differences find genuine purpose, respect, and unconditional acceptance. Rather than segregating or isolating individuals, the model seeks to actively empower them within a structured, nurturing farm environment that honors each resident's inherent strengths and contributions.

Today, the nonprofit organization has expanded its physical footprint and organizational reach significantly, currently providing ongoing residential support to more than 40 adults. The residential framework is anchored by eight distinct farm-style homes situated across the property, which offer stable, comfortable, and individualized living environments tailored to the daily needs of each resident.

In addition to its residential housing program, Benjamin’s Hope operates structured day programming focused on teaching practical life skills, cultivating healthy interpersonal relationships, and promoting greater self-reliance and independence among participants. These comprehensive initiatives are designed to foster holistic development and build lasting confidence for every individual involved in the organization's community.

By opening its doors to the wider public each year for gatherings like the Harvest Festival, Benjamin’s Hope continues to bridge the gap between neurodiverse individuals and the broader regional population. The event stands as an ongoing testament to the power of inclusion, mutual respect, and collaborative community building across the West Michigan area.
