Andrea Daniel to Retire as Athens Technical College President After Decade at Helm

Athens Technical College President Andrea Daniel has announced plans to step down from her executive post after a decade of guiding the institution through significant regional and infrastructural expansion. The college formally revealed on Tuesday that Daniel will conclude her tenure on Dec. 1, marking the end of a pivotal chapter in the school's contemporary history.

Daniel's planned departure marks the culmination of ten full years in the presidency. Throughout her decade-long administrative term, she oversaw major initiatives aimed at modernizing technical instruction, securing academic accreditations, and expanding the physical footprint of the college across multiple regional campuses in northeast Georgia.

Daniel first assumed the presidency of Athens Technical College in April 2016, becoming only the fourth leader to hold the top administrative title since the school was originally established. She succeeded Flora Tydings, who had stepped down from the role to pursue an educational leadership position in Tennessee.

When Daniel took charge of the institution in 2016, she brought an extensive institutional background to the role. She had already dedicated 19 years of service to Athens Technical College in various capacities prior to her presidential appointment, giving her an intimate knowledge of the institution's inner workings, staff, and student demographics.

In total, Daniel’s upcoming retirement will close out an expansive 30-year career working for the state of Georgia. Her three decades of public service reflect a deep and enduring professional dedication to the state's postsecondary education framework and technical instruction system.

Daniel's ties to the area and the college are also deeply personal. A native of Elberton, she began a notable portion of her early higher education career on the local level, having previously worked directly at Athens Tech's Elbert County satellite campus before rising through the institutional ranks to the college's main presidency.

Her leadership has contributed to the ongoing evolution of an institution whose roots date back to the middle of the twentieth century. Athens Technical College was originally established in 1958 as a vocational and technical school, designed to equip local residents with practical, career-ready skills for the region's emerging workforce.

Over the decades, the institution has extended its reach well beyond its primary campus, building an extensive network to serve neighboring communities. Under Daniel's oversight, Athens Tech has continued to operate satellite facilities in Elbert, Greene, and Walton counties, providing accessible higher education opportunities throughout northeast Georgia.

During her time as president, Daniel helped steer the college toward major milestones in student development and institutional performance. Under her administration, Athens Technical College became the very first higher education institution in the state of Georgia to join the Achieving the Dream initiative and subsequently earn the distinguished Leader College designation for student success.

Daniel's tenure was also defined by substantial capital improvements and campus modernizations. In 2017, the college advanced its academic resources with the establishment of the Technical College Library, providing upgraded learning assets and research space for students and faculty.

The college also directed significant resources toward supporting agricultural and regional industry needs. Among the major capital projects completed during her presidency was the construction of an $8.2 million Agriculture Science Building, which was strategically placed on the Elbert County campus in Daniel’s home community.

To enhance campus hospitality and the overall student onboarding experience, the college undertook further construction in 2019. That project resulted in the opening of a new $3 million visitor center designed to welcome prospective students, families, and community partners to the college grounds.

Physical and instructional expansion continued into 2020 with the development of a 39,000-square-foot Industrial Systems and Economic Development Building. The large-scale facility was designed and opened specifically to house hands-on educational programs in high-demand technical trades, such as air conditioning mechanics and industrial systems maintenance.

Beyond her campus duties, Daniel represented the college on regional governance bodies and earned wide civic recognition. She was elected to serve on the Board of Trustees for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, contributing to broader regional higher education standards.

Her contributions to leadership and community development were celebrated locally in 2020, when she was presented with the prestigious Athena Award in Athens. The recognition honored her sustained professional accomplishments and her influence on educational leadership within the region.

As Daniel prepares for her official retirement on Dec. 1, Athens Technical College administrators have not yet released an official schedule or timeline regarding the selection process to determine who will serve as the institution’s fifth president.
